Abstract

Vascular rings (VR) are rare congenital anomalies. We report successful surgical management of two different types of VR in non-identical twins. The boy had a double aortic arch and presented first with dysphagia, recurrent chest infections and stridor. Surgical division of the atretic distal segment of the left anterior arch was performed when he was 11 months old. The girl had a right aortic arch and retro-oesophageal subclavian artery, and presented with slowly progressive dysphagia and recurrent chest infections. Diagnosis was delayed due to a low index of suspicion on the part of the primary physician. Surgical division of the left ligamentum arteriosum was performed when she was 21 months old with good result. To our knowledge, this is the first report in the literature of the occurrence of VR in twins.
