Abstract

The pituitary vascular system of Anolis carolinensis is similar to that of other lizards. Distinct portal vessels connect the primary plexus of the median eminence with the secondary plexus of the pars distalis. The primary plexus has some connections with the neural lobe. The neural lobe plexus is fed by separate arteries, and drains into the pars intermedia. The latter lobe receives its blood supply by this route. The pituitary is drained into the vena retrohypophysea. The findings are discussed in relation to existing theories regarding the neurovascular control of the pars intermedia.
