Abstract

The third edition of this unique atlas has been published in the midst of an evolutionary transition in the performance of arterial and venous reconstructive surgery. As noted by the editor, techniques such as abdominal and thoracic aortic stent grafting are or soon will become a real option for the practicing surgeon. However, the impact of these new techniques on the everyday practice of vascular surgery is likely to remain uncertain for some time to come. To compose an atlas of vascular surgical techniques during this time of transition is to aim at a moving target, and the authors risk missing the mark or championing techniques that will not stand the test of time. Also relevant to the issue of timeliness is the perceived need for yet another new print atlas of vascular surgical techniques.
