Abstract

In this paper, nanocellulose fibers (NCFs) from the fruit bunch fiber (FBF), leaf blade fiber (LBF), and leaf sheath fiber (LSF) of windmill palm were prepared by sulfuric acid hydrolysis. The microstructure, surface physical property, chemical composition, and crystallinity index were studied. The results showed that the nanocellulose fibers from fruit bunch (FBNCFs), nanocellulose fibers from leaf blade (LBNCFs), and nanocellulose fibers from leaf sheath (LSNCFs) were successfully prepared with a thickness of 5 nm, and a diameter of 31 ± 8, 28 ± 7, and 27 ± 8 nm, respectively. The NCF from FBF was the softest sample, which can make a soft nanocellulose film. The adhesion force of LSNCF was the highest at about −11.78 ± 2.99 nN. Sulfuric acid treatment removed most of the hemicellulose and lignin.
