Abstract

We have a problem with our sixth forms; it is a comparatively new one since, until recently, sixth form education in England has been respected across the world for its ability to motivate a pupil's mind to delve in depth into a limited number of subjects. But times change and, with the change, our approach is found to be wanting. New subjects, such as Computer Studies, Economics for Life, Creative Design Technology — these we cannot find room for in the sixth form curriculum alongside ‘A’‐level work, while older specialisms are beginning to converge into more unified disciplines within the Humanities and integrated Science. Most importantly the world outside the schools has changed, and we need to respond to that challenge.
