Abstract

In England and Wales, one in five pregnant women now have caesarean births (Thomas and Paranjothy, 2001). The National Sentinel Caesarean Section Audit (NSCSA) has been completed and findings were published in a report in October 2001. This was a vast study with data on demographic and clinical characteristics of over a 150000 women who gave birth in all maternity units in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In addition detailed information was collected on all caesarean sections (CSs) that were carried out during the study period. The role of local facilitators was critical to the success of this extensive project and credit is due to all midwives and staff on delivery suites who were involved with data collection.
