Abstract

1. 1. Some of the theories of formation of varicose veins have been presented. 2. 2. The anatomy of the superficial veins of the abdomen has been discussed, especially with reference to anastomoses. 3. 3. A case of uncomplicated varicose veins of the abdominal wall, without occurrence of varicosities elsewhere, has been reported. 4. 4. Infra-red photography is a valuable adjunct in demonstrating the extent and connections of varicose veins. It may help in deciding the points at which ligations are to be done. 5. 5. Preliminary ligation or ligation alone (as in the case presented) is the preferred treatment, because embolism seems less likely than when injection treatment alone is employed. Recurrence also is less likely.
