Abstract

The 11-year history of the work that began in 1948 and resulted in the isolation of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) has been published. [1] In 1958, I presented these definitive results along with Witton and Bell. [2,3] By 1983, I was able to review 25 years of progress [4] and to diagram my impression of the natural history of an infection with VZV. I concluded from our findings and the findings of others that the interaction between VZV and its host is a dynamic process. In this paper, I wish to emphasize areas where we presently lack knowledge. First, we have not identified the constraints that limit the growth of virus in vivo.
