Abstract

In 1869 Trousseau wrote 'no physician has ever seen a patient die of chickenpox, though of course, there may be a fatal issue from some complication independent of the exanthematous fever'. These words are no longer true, reflecting a change in the epidemiology of chickenpox. Chickenpox is becoming more frequent in adult populations and with this the number of patients who suffer the sequelae of infection, including death, is increasing.
