Abstract

The spectra of the radiation emitted by mercury lamps in common use have been studied. Variations in the distribution of intensity in the spectra have been observed and traced to irregularities in the quartz envelopes of the lamps. A mercury lamp provided with a plane quartz window has been made which removes this defect and is advocated for spectroscopic measurements.
