Abstract

The generation times for individual Tetrahymena are highly variable, ranging from 74 to 135 per cent of the average generation time. Only 4 per cent of the cells show the same generation time as the statistically-derived average cell. The variation may be due to inequalities between cells arising at division. Because of the spread in individual generation times, any division synchrony in a population of Tetrahymena is lost very rapidly.
