Abstract
We have investigated the effects of changes in thyroid secretion on some erythrocyte and leukocyte NADP oxidoreductases of hexoses monophosphates shunt by TSH action. This study was performed on a group of 10 individuals (4 euthyroid subjects and 6 patients with thyroid diseases). G6PD and 6PGD activities were measured spectrophotometrically ; the standardization of the method was obtained by measuring the activity of both these enzymes in a reference group composed of 25 healthy blood donors. After administration of TSH which entrance the thyroid function, as evidence by PBI photoscan patterns, the following variations in enzyme activity in blood cells were observed: (1) in leukocytes the G6PD activity was significantly raised while the increase in 6PGD was not statistically significant; (2) no change at all was found in the activities of erythrocyte enzymes. These data suggest that leukocytes G6PD behaves like ‘a molecular target’ for thyroid hormones. Biochemical mechanisms involved are discussed and a scheme for G6PD regulation is presented according to the experimental results.
