Abstract

Variation in growth, some morphological characteristics, seed dormancy and herbicide susceptibility were studied in 25 strains originally collected throughout Japan. There were differences in length of the primary leaf, hairiness and anthocyan on leaf sheath. After sowing in early June in Kyoto, heading dates ranged from the end of July to mid-September and in general the strains from high latitudes headed earlier than those from low latitudes. Two forms, C-and F-form, in seed morphological characters were observed about shine on sterile lemma and awn on spikelets, but within several strains both forms were present. The degree of seed dormancy varied considerably and appeared to correlate negatively with 100 seeds dry weight among strains and also with the number of days required to heading dates. Bioassays with nitrofen, benthiocarb and propanil showed variations in herbicide susceptibility particularly to propanil where differences in necrotic length of the primary leaf were observed.
