Abstract

After intraperitoneal administration, diphenhydramine produces a decrease of histamine level in the hypothalamus and an increase in the caudate nucleus. After pre-treatment with L-histidine, diphenhydramine administration increases histamine levels in the hypothalamus, the caudate nucleus and brain stem. When diphenhydramine is administered first before L-histidine, no modification of the brain histamine levels has been observed. Different mechanisms of action of diphenhydramine are discussed.
