Abstract

The Urgonian of N Spain presents widely different aspects. The various plaeoenvironments can be grouped into three major systems that were under lithological biosedimentary control. The tectonic factor seems to be the most important: (1) tectonic quiet periods were accompanied by the formation of platforms (Bedoulian); (2) moderate deep-seated tectonic activity by reduction of the platforms and differentiation of the shallow marl basins (L. Gargasian); (3) persistent, accentuated deep-seated tectonic activity (Clansayesian to Middle Aptian) with the system broken up into internal platforms, lenticular masses, basins with black marls, and isolated platforms.
