Abstract
A simple analytical formula has been proposed to compute the vector propagation constant of single-mode graded-index fibers utilizing single parameter and two-parameter variational approximations for the LP 01 mode. These approximations have also been utilized to study the effect of on-axis dip in the refractive index profile on the propagation characteristic of the fiber.
