Abstract
The electrophoretic mobility of the two major RNA components of rat-liver mitochondria gradually decreases relative to the mobility of the cell-sap ribosomal RNA components when the temperature of electrophoresis is raised from 2 to 28°. Hence, the calculated apparent molecular weight of rat mitochondrial RNA is 40% higher at 28 than at 2°. This dependence of apparent molecular weight on the temperature of electrophoresis can explain the large differences in apparent molecular weight reported for the mitochondrial RNAs from different animals.
