Abstract

The contact potential difference of a sputter-cleaned Gd (0 0 0 1) surface was measured over the temperature range 230–400 K, using the Kelvin probe with Au as reference electrode. Contrary to the 3d ferromagnetic metals, a distinct increase in the obtained work function (WF) was observed below the Curie point, which is contributed to the chemical potential difference between the ferro- and para-magnetic state.
