Abstract

The threshold behavior of a microcavity laser with narrow spontaneous emission spectrum is investigated by modelling the cavity mode in terms of selectively amplified spontaneous emission. The results show that the mode gain is enhanced when the spontaneous emission spectrum width decreases, and the enhanced gain may induce broadening of the laser linewidth. We also calculate the local mode density of the optical field for a microcavity structure, and compare the mode density with the transmission coefficient of the microcavity structure.
