Abstract

A computer method was develop for fitting a decay curve, which does not require good initial estimates for the nonlinear parameters. It is only necessary to declare intervals in which their values are included. For a net of half-life-combinations, taken the intervals, the best linear parmeters and a “goodness of fit”-quantity are computed. This quantity, as a function of the nonlinear parameters, is used to compute the values of the “best” parameters and their standard deviation by means of parabolic interpolation. The sharpness of a chi-squarred-test, depending on the number of] data points, is investigated and a general, halfermpiric formular for the relative error of the half life of a single component with back-ground using equidistant dta points is deduced by analyzing suitable sysnthetic data. Under certain conditions the computer method can be generalized to any nonlinear curve fit.
