Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study investigates the optimal wind utilization efficiencies of eight-blade modified Savonius vertical axis wind turbine as a function of blade width, blade installation, and rotor speed under various inlet wind speeds. All the simulations are designed based on the uniform test method and conducted by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical calculation. Sliding mesh approach and k-ω SST turbulence modeling are employed in the processing. Results indicate that the optimal wind energy utilization efficiency and rotor speed increase almost linearly with the inlet wind speed for the modified eight-blade Savonius rotor with the diameter of 4 m in the range of wind speed from 6m/s to 10 m/s, while the changes of the optimal blade width and installation angle are non-monotonous.
