Abstract
SUMMARYZygospores of nine species of Mortierella were formed in culture. These included one species, M. ericetorum, with a hyphal covering around the zygospore, which represents the classical zygospore type in this genus. Naked zygospores are redescribed for M. marburgensis and M. parvispora and are described for the first time for M. bainieri, M. candelabrum, M. elongata, M. minutissima, M. pulchella, and M. zychae. Mortierella elongata has both homothallic and heterothallic isolates, whereas the other species are heterothallic. Neither substrate nor temperature of incubation affected the type of zygospore produced, but both factors were important in inducing zygospore formation and in determining the quantity of zygospores produced. Hemp seed agar and dilute Pablum agar promoted consistent zygospore formation. Some environmental conditions caused compatible strains to repulse one another. Isolates of ten other species failed to produce zygospores.
