Abstract

Legumes generally form symbioses with both VA mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi and nodulating, nitrogen-fixing Rhizobium. The presence of VAM generally enhances plant growth by reducing response to nutrient deficiency or other stresses, and by enhancing the nitrogen fixation process. The microbial and/or physiological interactions in these tripartite associations, however, are complex and poorly understood, and little is known on how different VAM fungi may affect these interactions. The objective of our study was to evaluate the variation in response of pigeon pea to dual inoculation with Rhizobium and 7 different VAM fungi, in terms of plant growth, the nitrogen fixation processes, and soil drought.
