Abstract

SUMMARY In 1985 research was started on the vocalizations (mainly the territorial song) of Cetti's warbler (Cettia cetti Temm.), a muscicapiid (Sylviinae) passerine resident throughout the year in wetland habitats. The intended aim was to record the song of as many males as possible from several localities to find out the extent of individual and population variation at different seasons and over the years. It was hoped to ascertain whether, after some 20 years from the first «arrivai» of this species in most of the non-coastal Po Valley, some characteristics of the two original populations were still detectable in the song of the males in the zone of contact. In fact, the range extension of the species started in the early sixties with individuals which have been proven to have originated from southern France.
