Abstract

Populations of plains pocket gophers (Geomys bursarius) were studied along a transect from the Missouri River westward to the foothil's of the Rocky Mountains, between approximately the 39th and 40th para'lels. Nongeographic variation among indiwduals, between sexes, and that relating to age and to season was examined. Geographic variation along the transect was documented using both univariate and multivariate analysis. Additionally, correlaJion between color of pelage and color of soil was tested. The small, pale, western subspecies, G. b. lutescens, and the much 1arger, darker, eastren race, G. b. majusculus, evidently intergrade along the transect studied in a narrow zone of 20 miles or less in Osborn County, Kansas, although some clinal variation (particularly to the west) was noted outside this area.
