Abstract

Vickers indentation tests were conducted on a hot-pressed silicon nitride to determine the fracture toughness. A nonlinear Weibull plot was obtained when analyzing the statistical variation in the measured indentation toughness data according to the Weibull distribution. Such nonlinearity may be attributed to the transition in the crack type from Palmqvist to half-penny.
