Abstract

The stability of the monohalide complexes of the divalent first-row transition metal cations in water as well as in other donor solvents follows the sequence: MnX + > FeX + > CoX + > NiX + < CuX + > ZnX +. Moreover, some of the properties of the M(solvent) 6 2+ solvo-cations may be rationalized in terms of the same series. The observed sequence is opposite to that known as the Irving—Williams series.
