Abstract

The composition of the leaf oil of Sitka spruce was determined and the quantitative variation within trees, within populations and amongst 3 southern, 5 central and 2 northern populations was recorded. No regional or geographic differences were found. In addition to the relatively large amounts of myrcene, piperitone, 1:8-cineole, and relatively low camphene and bornyl acetate percentages, the apparently unique isoamyl and isopentenyl isovalerate may serve to distinguish hybrids in areas of introgression with white spruce.
