Abstract

Summary The valine (14C) uptake into incubated whole anterior pituitaries is rapid; it reaches a maximum between 30 and 60 minutes with regard to gland weight. From estimation of total water volume (81,8 p. cent) and inuline space (27,8 p. cent), the intracellular/medium concentration ratio is 4,5 and 3,2 for immature rats and adult ones respectively. Valine is incorporated into proteins after a short lag of few minutes; incorporation is then linear until 2 hours incubation. Precursor incorporation into proteins varies with animal aging. On a per mg DNA basis, it expresses an increase of synthesized proteins per cell; this increase proceeds very fast until 48 days and then slows down. The protein specific activity reaches a maximum between 21 and 35 days; then it decreases quickly and remains approximately constant between 48 and 90 days. We conclude from present and previous results that anterior pituitary goes through a «maturation phase with first hyperplasy until 25 days, then hyperplasy + hypertrophy until roughly 50 days. This «maturation phase ends only when the rat becomes mature.
