Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to describe the characteristics of three varieties of Arabic; Syrian, Kuwaiti and Sudanese. This is done to understand and predict the differences which occurred in the development of these languages and their relation to the common base of the Arabic language. A descriptive analytic account of the phonological features of the three dialects will be given to show how some essential patterns of Arabic phonology and the whole vowel and consonant systems have been affected by processes like vocalization, metathesis, substitution, through pronunciation due to dialectal variation. Therefore, there are some important phonological differences between the standard form of Arabic and the modern varieties.
