Abstract

Spatial variation of the length and humid weight of Limnoperna fortunei (Dunker, 1857) in Jacuí River Delta and Guaíba Lake Basin (Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil). Natural clusters of golden mussels (Limnoperna fortunei) were sampled in January 2005, in four stations of the Jacuí River Delta (Garças Creek (DAG) and Jacuí Channel (DCJ)) and Guaiba Lake (Veludo beach (GPV) and Pombas Pier (GPP)), in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Measurements of the length and humid weight of 180 collected specimens on each station were tested based on Kruskal-Wallis (α = 0.05) followed by the SNK test of signifi cance for the different populations. This test did not show any signifi cant differences between stations GPV and GPP for the length (p = 0.247) or humid weight (p = 0.912). However, differences were found between DAG and DCJ for these parameters, which also differed from those found for other stations (p < 0.001). Environmental characteristics (water current, food support, etc.) and the effects of predation possibly have some infl uence on the differences among populations found in this study.

Highlights

  • (p = 0.247) or humid weight (p = 0.912)

  • Differences were found between das Garças (DAG) and DCJ for these parameters, which differed from those found for other stations (p < 0.001)

  • Environmental characteristics and the effects of predation possibly have some inÀuence on the differences among populations found in this study
