Abstract

Theoretical and practical aspects of the use of antithetic and common random numbers for variance reduction in simulation are considered. A proof of the optimality of antithetic and common random numbers in estimating the expected value of the response difference of a pair of functions of vector arguments is presented. Their efficiency for variance reduction under different assumptions is proved and applications to reliability, networks and queueing systems are discussed.
