Abstract
The current «assault on archives» is liable to produce surprises among researchers. Some are due to the state of the archives themselves and the research facilities available. Others, such as disparity of access, can be due to juridical deficiencies. The article points out some possible causes of such a defective situation; declares the value of archives, an instrument of government in ecclesial society, a divine and human institution; lists some urgent provisions for the «good government» of the ecclesial memory: the creation of the professional figure of the archivist, the need to construct the canonical archive system and he provides a basic plan for doing this. He adds some reflections based on simple sources and bibliography.
