Abstract

Neutron powder diffraction has been used to study the two title compounds,Sr2HoRuO6 and Sr2TbRuO6, in order to determine the crystal and magnetic structures of the materials. Both materialshave a distorted double perovskite structure and at temperatures below 30–40 K long-rangemagnetic order is observed. The magnetic structure for each compound consists of twointerpenetrating Type I arrangements, one for the ruthenium sublattice and one for therare earth sublattice, which are antiferromagnetically coupled to each other and order atthe same temperature. From variable temperature measurements the combination ofmagnetic interactions and their relative strengths was deduced. The antiferromagneticRu–O–O–Ru interaction is approximately constant in the compounds, but it is a factor of2.5 and 0.7 times stronger than the antiferromagnetic Ru–O–Ho and Ru–O–Tb interactionsrespectively.
