Abstract

A sample of faint variable objects detected on a series of UK 1.2-m Schmidt plates using the COSMOS measuring machine appears to comprise a population of quasars and active galaxies. The number–magnitude relation is found to show a constant increase by a factor of 5.8 per mag for 19 < B < 21. The colour–magnitude relation for the sample shows a marked correlation between apparent magnitude and B–R colour, which is tentatively interpreted as a reddening with decrease in luminosity.
