Abstract

This chapter describes the variable energy cyclotron (VEC) being built by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre at Calcutta. The 262 tonne main magnet frame has been fabricated at Heavy Engineering Corporation, Ranchi, and it has been assembled at the VEC Laboratory at Calcutta. The chapter illustrates the assembled magnet, including the main coils. The yokes and yoke legs have been made from cast steel and the pole pieces from forged steel. Ultrasonic testing has been done to check for porosity. The chapter highlights the composition of the steel. The machining accuracy required is high, and the accuracy has been tested by taking precise magnet gap measurements. The RF system utilizes a 400 kW RCA 6949 oscillator tube. Frequency variation is done by movable panels. The RF panels have been slightly redesigned to increase the maximum resonant frequency from 16.5 to 16.0 MHz, thus, pushing the maximum achievable energy for protons to 70 MeV. The power supply for the RF oscillator tube is a 20 kV, 20 A, d.c. power supply.
