Abstract

This paper describes several populations of gomphosphaerioid cyanophytes collected in nordic lakes in central Finland, southern Sweden, central Canada (Manitoba, Ontario) and northern Japan (Hokkaido). Variation of Coelosphaerium minutissimum is discussed and compared with the related species, C. subarcticum and C. punctiferum sp. nov. Two related species, Snowella septentrionalis and S. fennica sp. nov. are compared and characterized. In the genus Woronichinia, three new species are described and the phenotypic variability of the common planktic W. naegeliana is recorded. Survey data and an identification key of the genus Woronichinia are included. The morphology of two planktic Gomphosphaeria species (G. natans and G. virieuxii) from central Canadian lakes is described.
