Abstract

Two separate current systems have been identified in Swansea Bay — a rotatory current system, located in the northern part of the embayment, and a rectilinear current system, offshore. The amount of fine-grained sediment suspended in the rotatory currents varies with both direction during a tide cycle and tidal range. Measurements of suspended sediment indicate that the suspended load is higher on neap tides than spring tides. This is due to a change in axial orientation of the rectilinear system, which directs ebb-tide currents towards the northern part of the embayment on neap tides, but “deflects” ebb-tide currents from the northern area on spring tides.
