Abstract

High resolution profiles of the Hα and Hβ emission lines of NGC 5548 have been investigated as part of the international UV/optical monitoring campaign. The Hα and Hβ difference profiles show strong variations. The broad line difference profiles consist of three components. The main component is centered at the same wavelength as the narrow component. The intensity of this component is correlated with the UV continuum. It is symmetric and has constant width at zero intensity during the variations. Furthermore a blue and red component — best visible during low active states — varies independently.
