Abstract
Stand establishment of kleingrass (Panicum coloratum L.) is often reduced because of an inadequate root system. Growth characteristics of the primary root and the variability in numbers of adventitious roots on the sub‐coleoptile internode were examined during preemergence and postemergence. The “terminal preemergence length” of the primary root was 1.0 cm and ranged from 0 to 3.0 cm until the coleptile reached the soil surface, at which time primary root growth resumed. The resumption of growth was not a response to photosynthate, however, as 5 min of light per day was as promotive as continuous light.The number and length of basal adventitious roots were independent of the primary root length. The cultivar ‘Kleingrass 75’ appears to be variable for both primary root growth characteristics and for adventitious root growth. Differences in both traits could be used in a breeding program to improve seedling establishment.
