Abstract

The essential oil of Rosa damascena Mill eight cultivars essential oil extracted using a Clevenger apparatus by hydro distillation of the fresh flowers was and analyzed by Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The yield of the oil was 0.023–0.035% (v/w). Among the 23 components, citronellol (37.31–47.14%) was detected as the major components followed by trans-geraniol (21.34–26.65%), linalool (0.78–7.25%), phenyl ethyl alcohol (0.70–3.25%).maximum amount of citronellol was found in Rosa indica cultivar. Overall performance of oil characteristics meet with ISO standards and other well known rose oil producing geographical regime. The results also indicate that an extensive and detailed research from harvesting to end-product storage is needed for the establishment of the material and technology requirements to obtain Uttarakhand rose oil with standard composition and high quality.
