Abstract

Acoustic measurements of medial schwa in CVCəCV utterances were made in order to determine the coarticulatory effect of preceding and following vowels. Previous work [C. Fowler, J. Speech Hear. Res. 46, 127–139 (1981); Phonetica 38, 35–50 (1981)] indicated greater carryover than anticipatory vowel‐to‐vowel coarticulation in similar sequences. The principal finding of the preset study is that the relationship between anticipatory and carryover coarticulation varies according to whether the utterance is produced in isolation or in a carrier phrase. While there is generally more measured coarticulation on the schwa of utterances produced in a carrier phrase than in isolation, anticipatory coarticulation is especially variable according to such contexts.
