Abstract

The paper reports the successful growth of large, crack-free trans-stilbene (TSB) single crystals using an in-house developed vertical Bridgman setup. The material purification involved a novel vaporized method at 130 °C. Parameters like furnace setup and ampoule’s cone angle were optimized during the growth process. The Powder XRD pattern confirms the phase of material and crystallinity. The crystal exhibited high transmittance (78 %) in the visible region, with an optical band gap of 3.4 eV. Photoluminescence study indicated strong blue emission at 380 nm, with radioluminescence spectroscopy showing emissions at 387 nm under X-ray radiation. The crystal exhibited a scintillation decay time of 6 ns under 137Cs gamma source, highlighting its fast decay and efficient PSD property with a figure of merit of 2.24 for fast neutron detection applications.
