Abstract

The Knudsen cell — mass spectrometric technique utilized for high temperature equilibrium studies is described together with the usual thermodynamic procedure followed in the determination of the dissociation energy of gaseous molecular species. The application of the technique to the determination of the activity in alloys is also described. Physico-chemical properties of different classes of homonuclear and heteronuclear species are discussed in the light of the chemical and physical stability of the molecules. Correlations between gaseous species formed in the vapor over compounds belonging to groups of refractory materials of particular interest in modern technology are also discussed.
