Abstract

Frequently vapor-deposited films can be grown in metastable compositions and configurations. Superconductivity can be sensitive to the degree of metastability; in fact it has long been recognized that instabilities can lead to enhanced superconductivity. In the present paper we review the occurrence of superconductivity in amorphous films, in metastable films with high transition temperatures and in multilayered configurations, paying note when possible to tunneling characteristics and the information they give concerning electron-phonon coupling strengths.
