Abstract

In steam turbine operation, vapor space rusting can occur on interior metal surfaces not in intimate contact with the turbine oil. In some cases, operating practices can be recommended to reduce the danger of rusting. In other cases, service conditions may make these practices impractical. This has prompted the desire for a turbine oil with built-in vapor space protective properties. Effective vapor space inhibition has been obtained in steam turbine oils by the use of small concentrations of certain relatively low-molecular-weight organic acids. No degradation in pertinent turbine oil properties, for example, ASTM rust tests and demulsibility, is incurred. Laboratory test results have been confirmed by field tests.
