Abstract

Sky watchers in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and all of western Canada witnessed a brilliant red cloud and two vertical blue streaks form and disperse in their northwest sky. These events occured on two different nights between April 12 and 26, near midnight PST. Visible metal vapors were released by NASA at altitudes of about 1450 km, north of the Alaskan Arctic coastline (near latitude 72°). The vapors were released from rockets launched from the Poker Flat Research Range near Fairbanks, Alaska.
