Abstract

A gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) method was investigated for estimation of vapor pressures of fatty acid esters (FAE) with emphasis on ω-3 fatty acids. Specific retention data obtained from GLC were used to determine vapor pressures of ω-3 and ω-6 fatty acid esters at 200–230°C. Higher volatility of fatty acids with increasing ω number suggested higher solubility in supercritical CO 2. Vapor pressures of FAE reported should be of use for the design of separation processes such as supercritical fluid extraction and fractionation of ω-3 fatty acid esters.
