Abstract

The high PR plant design described operates at maximum brine temperature of 250°F and uses a pressure ratio of 1.58. The high PR VC process is extremely versatile in application, since it is well adapted to either a dual-purpose or a single-purpose plant. The high PR that is easily attainable in this design and is becoming increasingly more attractive from an economic view as the price of fuel continues to escalate. This design and process description is for a 2.37 mgd plant using a 65,700 cfm centrifugal compressor driven by a diesel engine operating across a four effect vertical tube foam evaporator (VTFE). The design employs an exhaust gas waste heat recovery scheme and a 17 effect VTFE as a low temperature brine heater while producing additional water. This high performance ratio plant is economically competitive with conventional multistage flash evaporators with its inherent low performance ratio and hence higher heat costs.
