Abstract

——In CTR 24 I discussed Christopher Newton’s six years as Artistic Director of The Vancouver Playhouse. Only three years later I am writing a farewell to Roger Hodgman, his successor. Hodgman, Australian-born, came in 1977 from working at the E15 Theatre School in Britain to take over the Playhouse Theatre School after the sudden death of Powys Thomas. For the Playhouse mainstage, Hodgman directed excellent productions of David Storey’s The Contractor and Horvath’s Tales from the Vienna Woods, drawing remarkable performances from some over-familiar local actors. These achievements made Hodgman the obvious choice when in 1979 Newton resigned to move to the Shaw Festival.
